New Work on Edward Lear (Centre for Modern Studies, University of York: 17 February 2018 )

Deadline: 1 Dec 2017

Keynote speaker: Jenny Uglow.

In recent years Edward Lear has gained in prominence as a focus for study among Victorianists and scholars of poetry. Edward Lear and the Play of Poetry, ed. by James Williams and Matthew Bevis (OUP, 2016),The Natural History of Edward Lear by Robert McCracken Peck (David Godine/ACC, 2016), and Mr Lear: A Life of Art and Nonsense by Jenny Uglow (Faber, 2017) are among the most obvious recent signs of a reconsideration of Lear's writing among scholars in literature and in the visual arts.

This one-day seminar gives emerging scholars an opportunity to present and discuss new work on Edward Lear. Papers are sought from graduate students and early career researchers on any aspect of Lear's life and work, including (but, as usual, not limited to):

* Lear and his contemporaries
* Lear's influence on later poets and writers
* Lear the visual artist
* Lear the traveller
* Lear and music
* New understandings of nonsense
* or any provocative and original readings of Lear's work

Please send short abstracts (no more than 100 words) for 20 min papers. Successful applicants will be informed within five days.
