Revista de Filología de la Universidad de La Laguna : Special Issue: American Travel Writing in Spain

The Spanish journal Revista de Filología de la Universidad de La Laguna (RFULL) seeks contributions for a special issue on 'American Travel Writing on Spain', to be published in 2019. The guest editor of this issue will be Pere Gifra-Adroher (Universitat Pompeu Fabra). Essays of circa 5,000-6,000 words, written in Spanish, English, French or German, must follow the editorial guidelines ('Normas de Publicación') of the journal. Submissions will be anonymously peer-reviewed by external referees.

Contributions to this special issue may address topics relating to the representation of Spain in the United States through travel writing from the colonial period to the present. The writing to be discussed may encompass travel books, memoirs, travel guides, private correspondence, periodical contributions and blogs. Moreover, texts on representations of Spain in travel writing by American travelers of all sorts, from politicians, journalists and scholars to adventurers, tourists, artists and expatriates will be welcome. Topics might focus on, but are not limited to: travelers and diplomats of the colonial period; romantic travel narratives; journeys to Spain in the 1920s; eyewitness accounts of the Spanish Civil War; travelers in Franco-ist Spain; women’s travel narratives; accounts of travel by car; modern literary and cultural tourism; influence of Cervantes and other writers; perceptions of bullfighting and other traditional festivals; artistic journeys; pilgrimages and religious itineraries; impressions of the Camino de Santiago; texts by Latino and African-American travel writers; contemporary cultural tourism; rewritings of other texts; new theoretical approaches to American travel writing on Spain.

The schedule will be as follows: abstracts of around 250 words and a short CV should be sent to the guest editor by 15 July 2017. Essays to be commissioned by 15 Sept 2017. Commissioned essays due to the guest editor by 30 April 2018. External referees will receive the completed papers in June 2018. The Editorial Team will notify which articles will finally be published by December 2018. Volume 37 of RFULL is to appear in the Spring of 2019.
